We perform all ultrasound examinations at Transparent Medical Imaging with our experienced and dedicated team of Sonographers.

We bulk bill all ultrasound examinations. We have same day appointments available.

Ultrasound is the most highly utilised diagnostic imaging modality in Australia. Advantages of ultrasound are that it is affordable, utilises non-ionising radiation in the form of high frequency sound waves and is dynamic meaning we can move around and assess structures in motion.

Ultrasound Examinations We Perform

• Obstetric (pregnancy) — dating scans, morphology (18–20 weeks), growth scans, Doppler studies
• Abdominal — liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, aorta
• Pelvic — uterus and ovaries (transabdominal or transvaginal)
• Renal — kidneys, bladder, prostate, ureters
• Musculoskeletal — shoulder, knee, hip, ankle, wrist, tendon and ligament assessment
• Breast — assessment of lumps, cysts, and breast tissue
• Thyroid and neck
• Scrotal and testicular
• Vascular — carotid arteries, DVT assessment, upper and lower limb veins and arteries

Preparation

Preparation depends on the type of ultrasound — we will advise you specifically when you book.

• Abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, pancreas, aorta): Fast for 6 hours before your appointment. Water, black tea, or black coffee without milk is fine. Take regular medications as usual.
• Pelvic, obstetric, renal, prostate, and bladder ultrasound: Full bladder required. Drink 1 litre of water approximately 1 hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder until after the examination.
• Musculoskeletal, breast, thyroid, vascular, and scrotal ultrasound: No preparation needed.

What to expect

You will be asked to lie on a padded table. Our sonographer applies a clear gel to the skin over the area being examined and moves a handheld probe over the surface to produce images. The examination is painless. Some pelvic ultrasounds use an internal (transvaginal) probe — this is always explained beforehand and consent is obtained. Most ultrasound appointments take 20–45 minutes depending on the area and clinical complexity.

Results

Images are reviewed by our radiologist who prepares a written report. Reports are sent to your referring practitioner within 24–48 business hours. Urgent results are communicated directly to your doctor when clinically needed.
